What is AI and what is it not and have we got it right by banning all AI?

As with most new jargon, there is a degree of confusion and misunderstanding about what Artificial Intelligence is. Take for example software that edits photographs; is the “Auto” option, often symbolised by a Magic Wand, AI? The answer is NO, because the formula doesn’t adapt (it is an equation that aims to transform the distribution of the range of blacks and whites to a symmetric bell-shape). There is no learning of personal preference; anotherwords, the same photograph processed on different days will be processed the same way, unless there is an update to the formula as part of a software update. To my mind the update is also not AI as the software is not learning – a software update may make certain photographs look less appealing. Software can only be labelled as AI if it is learning so that the same photograph edited using the same functions on different days produces different results(and if it is only learning from edits made by the individual user, why is this an issue to photography competitions? The learning is reflecting the user and one could argue that the use of the magic wand is less reflective of user expertise, which they are trying to incorporate through the exclusion of AI (I am of course in total agreement with the ban on the use of Generative AI to create the image!)
