Do you need more megapixels?

I’ve just had this image printed for a client at 1 metre by 70 cm (about 40″×27″ – A1 size), shot on my seven‑year‑old Sony A7 III. It ‘only’ has 24 megapixels but the print is razor sharp up close, which got me thinking about the megapixel race.

In my experience, sensor size and quality make a far bigger difference than headline resolution. I doubt this would have looked as good if I’d shot it on a 48 MP smartphone – double the megapixels, but lower quality.

What do you think? Have you made large prints from lower‑resolution cameras or phones, and how did they hold up?

I’d love to hear about your own printing experiences.
